A single mother of a 2 ½ year old son by the time I was 18. I was a store manager & trying to help out an employee that was also a teen mother, so I let her move in as a roomate. Within a week I realized I made a huge mistake. Her babies dad was a gang member & suddenly my apartment was a party house for him & his "friends". I immediately took my son to his dads & grandmothers while I teied to get her out of the apartment. For 2 days I couldn't even find her meanwhile 2 gang members were shot in front of my apartment on 2 separate occasions in the same day. It wasn't like all the junk they show on tv... since both victims were carted off by their friends & they only left blood everywhere, the cops acted like, oh well🤷 not our problem unless there is a body or the perpetrator. She caught wind I was looking to kick her out & asked to meet up alone in a store parking lot at like 1a.m. way after things were closed. My nieve idiodic self agreed, thinking we'd sit down and talk. I was sitting on the edge of the raised walkway just waiting (this was 1997, so no smartphone), when suddenly 3 car loads pull up fast (1 van) full of people and they all pour out followed by HER! She starts freaking out screaming obscenities not even making sense, she is coming right at me with pure hate in her eyes & I didn't need to hear her declaration that she was out to kill me. She took the 1st swing and I tripped backing up but caught myself before I hit the pavement then she just launched herself at me like some possessed hellcat! She was throwing blows but was terrible at it, you could totally tell she didn't grow up roughhousing w/3 uncles that rode pissed off bulls for a living or 2 other uncles twins well over 6' 5" both veterans & bikers that never took s from anyone. Once I finally got her off my back I hit her back hard enough to drop her and now full of pure adrenaline started kicking her until she quit flailing and coming at me. Her boyfriend started to pull her up when she said something in spanish then in English told her boyfriend to "Do It! Shoot the B*.. Now! Shoot her!". Everything slowed down when he lifted his arm and I saw the gun in his hand and he pointed it point blank center of my forhead. All I could do was pray to God to take care of my baby boy, watch over him and please never let him forget the absolute unconditionally all consuming love his mother had for him, and to not let him to ever become bitter or hateful over my death, to help his heart be free of pain. Then that s.o.b. pulled the trigger, "Snap"! I jerked and before even realizing I wasn't shot, he was fumbling w/it trying to smack it while she starts screaming again, a group of like 5 people come charging towards us and pure chaos follows. I got sucker punched in the gut which If you've never had that happen to you, I can't begin to explain the pain, I was fetal position on the ground watching fists flying, bats, sticks then there were lights & sirens. People scattered, I kind of blacked out for a second and came to with the police chasing the cars & van. Apparently the 7-11 store clerk had called 911 when he saw the initial 3 vehicles pull up & surround me. One of the guys that jumped in the fight took a bat to his face pretty bad so we hauled him to the Hospital. They kept trying to assess me because I was covered in blood but it wasn't my blood. The guy was in surgery for hours, a few busted ribs, fingers and badly busted jaw & concussion. God blessed me to be in my sons life past that night, he didn't have to go through childhood w/o his mom. Sadly God would call him home when he was just 18 ½... joining his baby sister & brother & granddad that we had tragically lost 9 years prior. I know God exists because he is the one that helps carry me through each day on this planet without my babies, without him there would be no me.
